Who Can Apply
The process to become an apprentice is a simple: meet the qualifications below and secure employment with one of our union contractors (and we can help on step #2).
Age
Must be at least 18 years of age. (An exception exists for 17-year-olds in a school-to-work program who must graduate high school/GED and turn 18 before registration.)
Education
Must have proof of a High School Diploma or GED certificate. (Applicants without proof may successfully complete an aptitude test administered by the NCIFTI to meet this requirement.)
Physical Capability
Must be ready and willing to work with your hands, to be on your feet, and to be physically capable of performing the essential functions of your chosen trade.
Transportation
Must have access to reliable transportation for both on-the-job training and apprenticeship classes.

Your Application Process, Simplified

Review the apprenticeship programs offered and find the one that speaks to you - for guidance or assistance, schedule time to chat with one of our instructors or current students!
Request and Submit Your Application
Contact NCIFTI to request an application packet. Submit your completed application with proof of age and education.
Secure Employment
Find a job with a participating union contractor (don't be afraid to ask us for help here, we may know of contractors who are hiring!). Once hired, your employer will provide a "Letter of Intent to Hire." This confirms your placement and allows you to move forward with registration.
Enroll and Begin Training
After NCIFTI receives your Letter of Intent:
- You'll become a union member by joining Painters District Council No. 30 (PDC 30).
- You'll sign an Apprenticeship Agreement and be considered officially registered.
- You'll start working for your union employer on jobsites alongside seasoned craftspersons who will help guide you along the way.
- You'll be able to start classes at the start of the next training quarter.

- You'll join Painters District Council No. 30 (PDC30).
- You'll sign an Apprenticeship Agreement.
- You'll be officially registered with the Department of Labor and start classes at the next available quarter.
